Our Year 10 Medical Imaging and VCE Physics students recently enjoyed a radioactivity workshop at Latrobe University.
Students had the opportunity to learn about new and emerging technologies through experiential learning. Using a Geiger tube, students investigated the strength and randomness of emission from alpha, beta and gamma nuclear radiation sources. Using a variety of graduated filter materials, they determined the type of nuclear source from its penetrability, and also the linear attenuation coefficient of the filter material. Put simply…They got to investigate the random nature of nuclear decay as well as the penetrating power of different types of nuclear radiation.
After the workshop, students eagerly explored the incredible facilities at Latrobe University to get a glimpse of what life after HGC might look like.
