On Tuesday the 11th of August, all the year 4 students had a virtual incursion with a young enthusiastic geologist named Lauren Vargo at 2:00pm.

Mr Palazzolo introduced Lauren Vargo to us. She told us of her experience being a geologist. Lauren studies climate and glaciers in New Zealand.

Lauren shared about her amazing adventures in the New Zealand mountains. Lauren mentioned that as it was very cold, she used some important gear to stay safe in the mountains.

Lauren taught us what a glacier was. I was quite interested as I didn’t know what a glacier was. A glacier is a collection of snow that turns into ice over many years.

It was interesting to know that by learning about glaciers you can study and compare the climate in the past with the present climate.

Lauren showed us some graphs that compared the climate over a long period of time.

In the last slide of her presentation, Lauren gave us some tips on how to become a scientist. After the presentation we got an opportunity to ask Lauren some questions so that we could clear our doubts. It was a very interesting and informative session.

Our incursion concluded with a joke from Mr Roberts.

Q: What does a cloud wear under his shorts?

I had a great time in our virtual incursion.
