Middle School News

Welcome to new and existing families of Hazel Glen College for 2017!
It is with great excitement that we opened our doors on Thursday 2nd February to a new cohort of Middle School students. I know that there were many feelings of nerves, excitement and anticipation for both our students and teachers. I certainly felt a lot of emotion in seeing some 930 Middle School students enter our College. We are thrilled to welcome our Year 5 students to Middle School. We have already seen them take on the challenges of using lockers, the cafeteria and timetables with great maturity. Our Year 7 students look outstanding in their blazers and have also adapted seamlessly to their new environment. It has been a great start to the year and we look forward to the journey ahead.

Parent Information Night/Meet the Teacher
Middle School parents/guardians and students are invited to attend our first information session for the year which will be held on Wednesday 15th February. The evening will commence at 7.00pm in the gymnasium with a presentation on what to expect from the middle school and how to support your children. Our Heads of Domain will also outline the subjects your children are taking this year. Following the presentation, you will be asked to make your way to your child’s homeroom where their homeroom teacher will go through specific information around our College expectations. This is an extremely important evening that will allow you to gain a clear picture of the year ahead. We hope to see you there!

Lockers and Portables
It has been brilliant to see the portables for our Year 7’s in place and operational this week, including our very special Double Story portables. The classrooms look engaging and the staff and students are creating a very special learning environment together. We are expecting our lockers for Year 7’s to be in place by the end of term 1. In the meantime, the students are being supported by their teachers with lockers inside their classrooms. We continue to thank both students and parents for their patience and understanding.

Our uniform looks simply stunning! The students are wearing their uniform with pride and showing great respect for themselves and the College. THANK YOU to all parents for your support in ensuring the uniform is worn by your children in its entirety every day. Can I please remind Year 7 and 8 parents that Blazers are our official College attire and are to be worn to and from the College. Students will be notified if they do not need to wear their blazer due to hot weather.

Leadership Opportunities
Hazel Glen College provides many opportunities for our students to develop themselves as leaders. We would like to congratulate Alex Mitris and Calizta Jankowitz for successfully being elected as our Middle School Captains for 2017. Both Alex and Calizta have already represented our College with pride and we look forward to their leadership throughout the year. We are currently seeking students interested in House Captain, House Leader and Co-Curricular Captain roles. The students have been notified through Compass how to nominate for these positions. We will formally present all our 2017 captains with their badges during our Middle School assembly on Thursday 9th March.

Parent communication
Hazel Glen College values our partnerships with families and places great importance in having open communication within our college community. We work with our families to achieve the best possible outcomes for all of our students at our College. In order to ensure that communication is open and clear, we ask that parents/guardians wishing to meet with their child’s teacher book a meeting through the Middle School reception located next to the Year Level Leaders office, or email your child’s teachers through Compass. This process ensures meetings are not rushed and teachers are able to give their full attention to your needs. Thank you for your support with this matter.

Middle School Assemblies
Unfortunately our first Middle School assembly for 2017 had to be moved last week due to the extreme weather. While we were not able to run our Assembly on Thursday, we certainly appreciated the respectful way our students supported the assembly on Friday. It was great to seeing engaged faces, respectful listeners and excitement around the opportunities presented for the year ahead. Middle School Assemblies, Year Level Assemblies and House Assemblies will run on a 3-week rotation. These assemblies will run 5 every Thursday afternoon during period 5 (2pm to 3pm) and provide many students with the opportunity to perform, present and highlight their great achievements throughout the year. We welcome and encourage our parents/guardians to join these assemblies. Notifications will be sent out through Compass informing parents of the assemblies allocated each week and where they will be held.

Pedestrian Crossing
Can I please ask all parents to support us in ensuring our students DO NOT cross Eminence Boulevard when entering or leaving the college at any other location apart from the designated crossings. While we acknowledge the traffic congestion at the front of our Middle School, student safety is of upmost importance and your support with this is much appreciated.
THANK YOU all for your contribution to the smooth start we have had at our College so far. I look forward to our extended partnership throughout 2017 and the great opportunities we can continue to offer our students.
