College News

Welcome to the March newsletter with information about what’s happening in the Junior School. It’s incredible to think that we are in Week 5 already, halfway through the term. This week in our eNews clip, you will meet Lisa Stafford, the Assistant Principal for Wellbeing and Operations in the Junior School. Lisa speaks with our Junior School Captains about their new role and how they will help lead the Junior School in 2019.

Interim reports and Parent / Teacher Interviews
At Hazel Glen College, you will receive an Interim Report for your child at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. An Interim Report is a brief snapshot of the progress your child has made to date. All information provided is based on the student’s experiences over a term. It is provided as an indication only of progress over this term. Your child’s Interim Report will be accessible through Compass.

Parent / Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 26 March. The Junior School classroom interviews are open for all students in Year 1 – 4, with specialist interviews available for Prep – 4. You can book your interview time through Compass. This day is a variation to school day and students are not required to attend a normal school day. However, it is an expectation that students attend their interview times with parents. We value open and clear communication and take every opportunity to strengthen our partnerships between parents, students and staff. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College. We hope you find this a valuable opportunity to discuss your child’s Term 1 progress with their teachers.

National Day of Action against Bullying
This Friday 15 March is the 2019 ‘National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence’. This is Australia’s most significant anti-bullying event for schools.

Our SRC student leaders have been selling ‘Bullying No Way’ wristbands for $1. This is a reminder for the students about the importance of kindness. The profits made of these wristbands will go towards future SRC initiatives.

Our classrooms have focused on this important theme in their PEP sessions and take the time to talk to your students about the National Day of Action.

Junior School Advisory Committee
On Monday 18 March we will hold our first Advisory Committee for the Junior School. Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered their time to be in this group. We are looking forward to sharing what is happening and having the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts with our parent community.

Have a great weekend!

Camp’s
Last week our Year 5 students attended camp at Arrabri Lodge in Warburton. What an amazing experience for our students! Arrabri provided outstanding facilities with a flying fox, giant swing, damper cooking, ropes courses and a showcase of student talent during talent shows at night time. The kids were certainly very busy. The weather was kind and allowed students to experience all the activities available. We were very proud of the children and the way they embraced the camping experience, especially those children who were attending camp for the first time. The opportunities our camping program offers for students to develop their independence, resilience and to continue to build relationships with their peers and teachers are outstanding. I am sure the students will take life long memories with them from these experiences.

It was with great disappointment that we had to postpone our scheduled Year 6 camp to Coonawarra in Bairnsdale. Student and staff safety are always our number one priority and this was certainly at the forefront of our decision when seeking advice from the camp, fire department and Education Department. We look forward to our Year 6 students enjoying their camping experience later in the year. Further information about the change of dates will be provided by our Year 6 Year Level Leader, Brooke Ampfea.

Uniform
We are extremely proud of our Hazel Glen College uniform and the children have worn it with pride this term. The uniform looks outstanding in the Middle School. As we enter the winter months I ask all parents to please ensure you have full winter uniform available for your children. A reminder that our Year 7 and 8 students are expected to wear ties during Term 2 and 3. Our official College Uniform is the winter uniform with College blazer. Once again, we remind students to please ensure they are wearing their blazer too and from school each day unless directed by the office.

Careers Expo

On Thursday 14 March, 50 of our Year 11 students will attend a Careers Networking event that encourages young people to meet and make contact with careers advisors and employers. This event is hosted at Plenty Ranges Art Centre for the Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employment Network (HWLLEN) this is a not-for-profit, membership based organization that works at the grass roots level to assist young people to complete Year 12 or its equivalent and improve transition outcomes for young people. Students will be able gain careers advice, network with future employers and gain specialist advice about future training and education providers. We hope that this will be the first of many events that prepare our senior students for their future careers.

Positive feedback on City Experience students

I would like to share with our parent community that twice in two weeks I have been contacted by members of the public who have travelled on trains both to and from the City with our Year 9 students. It is with great pride and respect for our students and parents that I would like to share that the College has been informed of the mature and respectful behaviours of our students. Particularly observed was a group of Year 9 students who all gave up their seats for more mature passengers, with a member of the public informing us that they were a credit to the college and their parents. We definitely agree!
